We’ve Fig-ured It Out!

Guess what? TGH is going to continue, woo hoo! We’ve found someone to keep it going, but do bear with us over the next little while whilst we transition and fig-ure it all out. And many thanks to those of you who indicated willingness to volunteer in one way or another. We may just call on you one day =) So looks like we should be doing better post Veg-xit than post Brexit…not that that would have been very difficult!

Shuffle Festival is on this Saturday at the Tower Hamlets  Cemetery Park for just 24 hours, unlike the week-long film of previous years, perfect plan for the weekend now that summer has finally decided to show up. And check out the Shuffle restaurant for an authentic Indonesian three-course feast by Indonesian extraordinaires Ayam Happy where you can look forward to dining with views of the dense jungle-like surrounds of the park and participate in the ongoing restoration of the historic lodge building in this urban oasis. And cap it off with a post-dinner evening walk.

Now onto the figs which we are having for the first time in our boxes…did you know that strictly speaking, figs are not really a fruit at all? They are actually a cluster of more than a thousand tiny flowers that blossom unseen beneath the silky skin and then go on to produce the “fruitlets”, or seeds.

Try roasting the figs by cutting an X into the top of each fig and squeezing it gently to open it up. Trickle a little honey into each fig then roast at 200 deg C for 10-15 minutes, until hot and bubbling. Or grill them with nuts to a yield delicious sticky cinnamon figs. Serve with thick Greek yoghurt and honey. Or make it in advance into jam and have it with your yoghurt and granola for breakfast.

They can also be poached, potted, baked in pies and pastries, or turned into chutneys. They team up very well with a wide variety of other ingredients, too: try them with fresh young goat’s cheeses, but they’ll also hold their own with stronger stuff such as salty prosciutto, punchy, tangy blue cheeses and even anchovies. If you still need more ideas check out these 27 delicious ways to eat fresh figs.
